A behind-the-scenes look at the Bomas International Convention Complex — and what it taught me about what it really takes. By Art Wambua
Today I got a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Bomas International Convention Complex. And what stayed with me wasn’t just the scale it was the coordination.
We often admire the final space: the lighting, the finishes, the furniture, the experience. But today, I saw what it really takes to get there.

Imagine onboarding every creative from scratch the KDF project management team, electrical teams, plumbing teams, interior designers, and the main contractor all aligning toward one shared vision
That’s what stood out most. The talent in that room was undeniable. But talent without structure without each team knowing exactly where their work begins and where it hands off doesn’t deliver a finished space. It delivers chaos.
As designers, it’s a reminder that we are not just creatives. We are part of a much bigger system. We sit at the intersection of vision and execution, translating ideas into specifications that electricians, plumbers, and contractors can actually build from.

The better we understand that system its language, its rhythms, its pressure points the more valuable we become. Not just as people who make things beautiful, but as people who make complex projects work.
Big projects don’t just build spaces. They build discipline.
