Therefore, accessible design improves the experience of a much wider group of users.
Materials influence hygiene and maintenance
Interior materials should be selected according to where and how they will be used.
A finish suitable for a private bedroom may not withstand the traffic of a hotel lobby, school corridor or busy restaurant.
Healthcare environments require materials that can be cleaned effectively. Offices and public facilities need durable finishes that can be maintained without frequent replacement.
Designers also consider whether materials release strong odours, trap dust, absorb moisture or create slippery surfaces.
These practical concerns have a direct effect on comfort, safety and the long-term performance of the interior.
Selecting appropriate materials early can also reduce maintenance costs and prevent unnecessary replacement.
Interior design and wellbeing require collaboration
Interior designers do not work alone. Healthy and functional environments depend on coordination between architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors, suppliers and clients.
The architect develops the wider building design, while engineers address structural and building-service requirements. Interior designers focus on how internal spaces function and respond to the people using them.
When these professionals work together from the beginning, lighting, ventilation, acoustics, accessibility and material decisions can be coordinated before construction advances.

Bringing wellbeing into the industry discussion
Design and wellbeing will form part of the discussions at the Interior Design Summit 2026, taking place from August 26 to 30 at Sarit Expo Centre in Nairobi.
Organized by the Interior Design Society of Kenya in partnership with Homes & Gardens Expo, the Summit will bring together designers, manufacturers, suppliers, educators and property professionals.
Under the theme “Building the Interior Design Economy,” the event will examine how interior design contributes to construction, manufacturing, professional practice and the quality of spaces used by Kenyans.
As investment continues in housing, hospitality, offices, healthcare, education and retail, greater attention must be given to how these buildings affect their users.
A successful interior should not only photograph well. It should help people move comfortably, work effectively, learn, recover, rest and participate fully in daily life.
Designing for wellbeing is therefore not an optional decorative exercise. It is part of creating buildings that genuinely serve the people using them.
